Design with knowledge
This video presentation by Thomas Hobbs, Design Director at Henning Larsen, explores how critical thinking – applied at a small scale but with significant impact – can shape more sustainable design outcomes. Through selected project examples, the presentation illustrates how architecture can embed carbon that would otherwise enter the atmosphere, offering a fresh perspective on reducing our carbon footprint.
The construction industry is responsible for 40 % of global emissions – 11 % of which stem from pre-construction activities such as material extraction, production, and transport – and the session highlights how Henning Larsen’s Australian practice addresses these challenges. It showcases how visionary design, backed by good governance and close collaboration between architects and authorities, can transform ambitious environmental goals into sustainable precincts that serve the long-term needs of communities.
Sustainable furniture solutions. Responsibly tackling the challenge of reducing embodied carbon.
Chris Gibbs, DESKLINE Strategic Business Unit Manager at LINAK, explores the furniture industry's crucial role in reducing carbon emissions and its journey toward sustainable design. He reflects on the impact of structural materials like steel and the importance of prioritising sustainability alongside aesthetics and functionality in furniture design.
Chris highlights how, in 2009, LINAK introduced a power management system that significantly reduced standby energy consumption in height-adjustable desks, saving approximately 250,000 metric tonnes of CO2. This innovation emphasises the impact of furniture in a building's overall carbon footprint, as it accounts for 10-30 % of interior emissions, particularly in retrofit projects.
With ambitious goals set for 2030 – aiming for a 70 % reduction in scope 1 and 2 emissions and a 25 % reduction in scope 3 emissions – Chris points out how LINAK is focusing on strategies such as enhancing material efficiency, collaborating with suppliers, and utilising Environmental Product Declarations for transparency. LINAK is committed to contributing to a more sustainable future while meeting the evolving demands of modern workplaces by prioritising longevity, recyclability, and innovative design.
