Case story

Packing workstations with optimised ergonomics

At LINAK Denmark, our Danish sales subsidiary, ergonomics is a key focus in the warehouse. When the old packing workstations were due for replacement, the team decided to develop a new solution themselves to ensure all ergonomic requirements were met. Their approach may serve as inspiration for others looking to improve ergonomics at their own workstations.

As a company supplying lifting columns designed to improve ergonomics in homes and workplaces, it was natural for the Danish subsidiary to integrate height‑adjustable LINAK products into the new packing setup in its warehouse.

A custom-built solution

Initially, the team explored the Danish market for a complete plug‑and‑play solution. As Supply Chain Manager, Berit Timm Sørensen, explains: “We were not able to find a supplier offering exactly the solution we were looking for. So, we decided to do it ourselves – after all, we have the right competencies in-house for a task like this.”

Warehouse assistant Carsten Skovhus led the project. With 20 years of warehouse experience, optimisation is a natural part of his work. Carsten produced the first sketches for the new setup and gathered input from colleagues along the way. The drawings were then handed over to the in-house carpenter, who built the setup – reusing lifting columns and other materials already available in the warehouse.

Ergonomics in every detail

The team soon had two new packing workstations ready, each carefully designed with ergonomics in mind. As Carsten explains: “The workstations are height‑adjustable, which is essential as my colleagues range from 160 to 198 cm in height. We also focused on keeping frequently used items close at hand, helping reduce unnecessary bending, twisting or stretching.”

Carsten highlights the computer module: “We placed the computer and label printer on a separate module. This module is height adjustable as well and operated using a foot switch, so there is less need to bend. The module also has an additional lifting column that raises the keyboard section when there is a need to change label rolls. It is a practical and functional solution.”

A result that makes a difference

Shortly after the new workstations were put into use, warehouse assistant Pia Wils Nielsen shared her experience: “This is one of the best improvements in my 12 years at LINAK.”

Pia already notices the benefits: “I no longer feel discomfort in my body, and everything I need is within easy reach.”

Carsten agrees: “I am pleased with the result. The setup is straightforward to work at, and we reduce time spent walking back and forth to fetch items.”

Berit sees clear value in the new solution as well: “It has been a really good process. These packing workstations are built on the employees’ experience, and the result is a setup with smart solutions. I believe it can support wellbeing and long-term job satisfaction.”

Continuous improvement

At LINAK Denmark, ergonomic optimisation is an ongoing process. The next step in the warehouse is to make the computer module mobile, enabling it to be moved easily when packing large shipments away from the main workstations.
